As a key organic chemical raw material, it is mainly used to produce furan resins, furfuryl alcohol-urea-formaldehyde resins, and phenolic resins of various performances. It also acts as a solvent, dispersant, or wetting agent for dyes, phenolic resins, and furan resins.
Hydrogenation of furfuryl alcohol produces tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol, an excellent solvent for varnishes and pigments, and a rocket fuel component. It is also used in synthetic fibers, rubber, pesticides, and the foundry industry. Additionally, it can be used to manufacture plasticizers—its esters have better cold resistance than those of butanol and octanol. It is used in the production of calcium fructose diphosphate, as an intermediate for synthetic dyes and pharmaceuticals, and in the synthesis of chemical intermediates and pyridine.
