Ammonium iron citrate, also known as ferrous ammonium citrate, comes in two colors: brown and green. It has no odor, a salty taste, and an iron fishy smell. It is highly hygroscopic and can be reduced to ferrous salts by light. In solution, it is more unstable and soluble in water, but insoluble in organic solvents such as ethanol and ether. The aqueous solution is neutral, and green is more easily reduced by light than brown. Brown scale like ammonium iron citrate has a higher iron content, while green scale like ammonium iron citrate has a lower iron content.
