Core Properties

Fipronil is a broad-spectrum, phenylpyrazole-class insecticide with contact and stomach action. It typically appears as a white to off-white crystalline powder, slightly soluble in water (0.38 mg/L at 20°C) but soluble in organic solvents such as acetone, methanol, and dichloromethane. It exhibits good stability under normal storage conditions, with a melting point of 200-201°C and a boiling point of decomposition above 300°C.

Mechanism of Action

Fipronil acts by inhibiting the γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA)-gated chloride channel in the central nervous system of insects. This blocks the flow of chloride ions, leading to hyperexcitation of the nervous system, convulsions, and eventual death of the target pest. It has no cross-resistance with traditional insecticides (e.g., organophosphates, pyrethroids), making it effective against resistant pest populations.

Main Applications

• Used as an ectoparasiticide for dogs, cats, and other companion animals to control fleas (Ctenocephalides felis, Ctenocephalides canis), ticks (Dermacentor variabilis, Ixodes scapularis), lice, and mites.
• Formulated into spot-on solutions, sprays, collars, and shampoos. It provides long-lasting protection (up to 1-3 months per application) by accumulating in the animal’s sebaceous glands and being continuously released onto the skin and coat.

• Applied to control a wide range of chewing and sucking insects in crops such as rice, corn, cotton, vegetables (cabbage, broccoli), fruits (apples, oranges), and ornamental plants.
• Target pests include stem borers, leafhoppers, aphids, thrips, beetles, and caterpillars. It is used as a soil treatment, foliar spray, or seed treatment to protect crops during critical growth stages.

• Used to control cockroaches, ants, termites, and other structural pests in residential, commercial, and industrial buildings.
• Applied as a bait, dust, or residual spray in pest-infested areas (e.g., kitchens, warehouses, gardens) to eliminate pest colonies and prevent infestations.
