PropertiesThis product is a white powder; odorless and bitter in taste. It is easily soluble in ethanol, insoluble in chloroform; easily soluble in glacial acetic acid, and soluble in sodium hydroxide test solution. The melting point is 200-204°C. Ursodeoxycholic acid is a unique component in bear bile. It is an isomer of chenodeoxycholic acid but has lower toxicity and requires a smaller dosage. After oral administration, it is rapidly absorbed; two blood drug concentration peaks appear at 1h and 3h respectively. The biological half-life is 3.5-3.8 days. UDCA in the liver quickly combines with glycine or taurine, is excreted from the bile into the small intestine, and participates in the enterohepatic circulation. Part of the conjugated UDCA in the small intestine is hydrolyzed back to the free form; another part is converted to LCA under the action of bacteria, which is then sulfated, thereby reducing its potential liver toxicity. It has the effects of dissolving gallstones, inhibiting cholesterol deposition in the blood, calming the liver, promoting bile flow, and detoxifying. Its sodium salt is more effective than other bile acids in promoting liver glycogen storage, fatty acid hydrolysis, and lowering blood sugar.
UsesGallstone-dissolving agent.
