Magnesium stearate is a compound of various solid organic acids of magnesium, mainly composed of varying proportions of magnesium stearate and magnesium palmitate. Magnesium stearate is a widely used pharmaceutical excipient that is non-toxic when taken orally, but excessive consumption can cause diarrhea or mucosal irritation.
Magnesium stearate, also known as magnesium octadecate, is a fatty acid salt type anionic surfactant. It appears as a white fine powder with a slight odor and a smooth texture. Soluble in hot fatty hydrocarbons, hot aromatic hydrocarbons, and hot oils, but insoluble in alcohols and water. When exposed to strong acids, it decomposes into stearic acid and corresponding magnesium salts. Magnesium stearate has good adhesion and lubricity to the skin, and is used in cosmetics for powder products to enhance adhesion and lubricity. Magnesium stearate can be used as a heat stabilizer for polyvinyl chloride, with a stability effect similar to calcium stearate. It can be used in conjunction with zinc soap or calcium soap for food packaging materials, but its application is not widespread. Magnesium stearate can also be used as a mold release agent for plastic products, a raw material for cosmetic powders, moisturizing ointments, a powder molding agent for pharmaceutical tablets, and a semi transparent smoothing agent for paints. The laboratory produces finished magnesium stearate through the double decomposition reaction of sodium stearate and magnesium sulfate. It can also be refined by combining a mixture of edible solid organic acids (stearic acid, palmitic acid) with magnesium oxide.
