Hydrofluoric acid (HF) differs from other acids because the fluoride ion readily penetrates the skin, causing destruction of deep tissue layers, including bone. Pain associated with exposure to solutions of HF (1-50%) may be delayed for 1-24 hours. If HF is not rapidly neutralized and the fluoride ion bound, tissue destruction may continue for days and result in limb loss or death. HF is similar to other acids in that the initial extent of a burn depends on the concentration, the temperature, and the duration of contact with the acid.
Hydrofluoric acid solutions are clear and colorless with a density similar to that of water. The most widely-known property of HF is its ability to dissolve glass. Hydrofluoric acid also attacks glazes, enamels, pottery, concrete, rubber, leather, and many metals and organic compounds. Upon reaction with metals, explosive hydrogen gas may be formed. ? Fluoride ions are acutely and chronically toxic. HF readily penetrates skin, allowing it to destroy soft tissues and decalcify bone. Acute effects of exposure to concentrated (>5%) HF include severe pain, respiratory irritation, severe eye damage, and pulmonary edema. Exposure to less concentrated solutions may have equally serious but delayed effects. ? Even though HF is chemically defined as a “weak” acid it has a considerable ability to cause severe tissue damage and death. A splash of HF to more than 25% of the body can be fatal.
Hydrofluoric acid is used both concentrated and in hydrofluoric acid products. In addition to its use in the classic chemical industry and chemical laboratories, hydrofluoric acid is mainly used in the electrical, semiconductor and solar industries for surface treatment.
Since the chemical has a corrosive effect on glass, it is used in glass processing for etching, matting and polishing. Hydrofluoric acid is also used to stain the finishing surfaces on stainless steel parts in workshops.
Diluted hydrofluoric acid can be part of various degreasing, washing and cleaning agents for industry and trade.
