At room temperature, it is a colorless or pale yellow transparent liquid with a slight odor. It is readily soluble in water and many other organic solvents, and has active chemical properties, being prone to hydrolysis and polymerization. N-vinylpyrrolidone is also an organic solvent with extremely excellent performance. Explosion limit: expl.lim. 10%, sensitive to light.

This monomer of plastic can be added to the formula of UV-curable coatings to form a flexible and hard plastic film. Adding NVP to radiation medical formulations can enhance the elongation, viscosity and other properties of high-gloss and low-gloss coatings.
