Microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) is a product of natural cellulose hydrolyzed to its ultimate polymerization degree by acid. Its color is white or nearly white, odorless, tasteless, and the particle size is generally about 2-80 μ m. It has the advantages of low density, high modulus, renewability, degradability, and wide source, and can be used as a reinforcing agent to improve the performance of composite materials.

Generally, the density of microcrystalline cellulose is lower when freeze-dried, and higher when spray dried. The moisture content is about 5%. Microcrystalline cellulose is dispersible in water but insoluble, insoluble in dilute acids, organic solvents, and oils, swells in dilute alkaline solutions, and partially dissolves. Disperse microcrystalline cellulose powder in water to obtain white transparent gel or paste, which is still stable after years of storage except for extremely thin ones.

Microcrystalline cellulose is mainly used as a non caloric food additive, pharmaceutical excipient and dispersant, filler for thin layer chromatography and column chromatography, carrier for dyes and pigments, reinforcing filler for thermosetting resins and laminates, coating, emulsifier, and can also be used in water-based paints and ceramic industries.
