Ethyl oleate is an organic compound. It is a colorless or yellowish liquid with an oily texture and a distinctive smell. Ethyl oleate is soluble in organic solvents such as alcohols and ethers.

 

Ethyl oleate has many uses. It is often used as a plastic softener, solvent, lubricant and surfactant. In industry, ethyl oleate is also used in the preparation of synthetic fragrances, flavors, lubricants and dyes. Ethyl oleate can also be used as a starting material for the preparation of other organic compounds.

Ethyl oleate can be prepared by acid catalysis. Oleic acid is reacted with ethanol under the action of acid catalyst to produce ethyl oleate and water. The reaction process often uses sulfuric acid or phosphoric acid as a catalyst.
