Sodium hexametaphosphate has the appearance of a colorless glassy solid powder with molecular formula (NaPO3)6. CAS No: 10124-56-8, molecular weight 611.17, melting point 616℃ (decomposition). It is insoluble in organic solvents, soluble in water, but dissolves very slowly at low temperatures, dissolves quickly in warm water (30~40℃). The aqueous solution is weakly acidic (pH value = 6.0~6.8). It has a strong affinity for moisture and can gradually absorb moisture in the air to become a sticky gel-like substance.

Sodium hexametaphosphate is used as a dispersant in non-salting water-based mud by forming chelate phosphate to remove Ca2+ and Mg2+ ions. Therefore, it can effectively prevent mud precipitation caused by Ca2+ and Mg2+, and is very effective in preventing cement and gypsum invasion in mud treatment. However, it is not suitable for high temperature, high salt and high calcium conditions. Its main function in industry is to soften hard water.

Sodium hexametaphosphate is mainly used as a quality improver and pH regulator, chelating agent, binder, and expander in food additives. It is also used as a water retention agent in China's GB2760-1996 and can be used in canned food, fruit juice drinks, dairy products, and bean products. It is also used as a dye dispersant and water treatment agent.
In mining, drilling, electroplating, papermaking, dyeing, textile, and leather processing, it is used as a flotation agent, slurry regulator, metal surface treatment agent, copper plate paper brightener, dye dispersant, and tanning aid, etc. In photography, it is used to prevent hard salts or heavy metal ions from forming spots on the film. In food processing, it is used as a dispersant, water retention agent, anti-settling agent, antimicrobial agent, and emulsifier. In cooling water treatment, it is mainly used as a corrosion inhibitor and scale inhibitor.
